Groundsman Espresso
Groundsman Espresso is an example of compact design with a local story at the core. The design for this project not only needed to be functional and aesthetically pleasing but it also needed to act as an insertion of ‘vibrancy’ in a tired 80’s building. The name ‘Groundsman’ is a reflection of the nearby workers at the local cricket ground – Blundstone arena.
As this is a small space, storage and work-flow was paramount in this design. By using a consistent and cohesive material palette throughout both the public service space and the preparation space, storage was integrated as part of the overall aesthetic. This providing a visually positive and cohesive approach that increases functionality for the staff within the space.
A neutral/natural material palette is paired with a ‘workers green’ to connect with the ‘Groundsman’ backstory of the space. This ‘hole in the wall’ cafe turns over an amazing amount of coffees and small meals in a compact space. Privacy but connection to the outside was thought about and we made the most of the existing space and large amount of glazing to achieve this.
