We have formed an exciting partnership to bring these two disciplines together so that landscape planning decisions are integrated into the building/renovating design process. This is the ultimate permaculture approach where different elements are designed to come together forming one whole functional and stunningly beautiful system, your home.

South Hobart Renovation
This extensive renovation to a heritage listed home was designed to be fun and fresh but highly functional and sustainable. The clients wish was to be earth and user conscious and we did this by using recycled and sustainable products and fixtures and to reuse as much of the existing fabric as possible. The result was great, and the clients, builders and Designful were very happy with the finished spaces.
JANE HILLIARD – DIRECTOR, DESIGNER: Graduating in Environmental Design from the University of Tasmania, Jane has enjoyed a ten year career as a successful architectural building designer. Her endeavors and passion for sustainability have enabled a variety of collaborations with environmentally innovative Australian architects. Travelling from Tasmania to Far North Queensland and back, Jane has worked for a number of leading firms as project leader, effectively designing climate responsive corporate buildings, urban spaces and user responsive homes.
For Jane and Designful, collaboration is the key component to a successful project. “I question clients and prompt them to really consider their lifestyle. What are their true necessities? We work out what the needs and desires are for the build – together. I take budgets very seriously and invest time in creating the concepts that address all requirements of a project. Good clear communication is paramount between client, designer and builder and so I am mindful of every brief to ensure absolute clarity. For me great working relationships achieve great results”.
KYLE HOLMSTROM – PROJECT LEADER, DESIGNER, DOCUMENTER: In regard to design, Kyle has a passion for practical, affordable, economical and minimal impact design. He has a preference for raw, natural, recycled and industrial materials and believes that designers have a responsibility to address the ‘end of life’ implications of their creations. For Kyle, design is primarily problem solving – producing viable solutions within given constraints that service the needs/ wants of the user. Outside of architecture Kyle is partner and co founder of a furniture design business ARKHUS, is actively interested in graphic and product design and spends most of his weekend renovating someone’s house. when he needs a well earned break, he loves travelling, bushwalking and playing with his daughters.
KATIE DORNEY – DESIGNER, DOCUMENTER: Katie is a UTAS graduate with a Bachelor of Environmental Design. “My most important ethos is living mindfully and with responsibility. Ever listened to ‘The Minimalists’ Podcast? That pretty much sums it up for me. Simple living, my ethos in a nutshell I guess.
I always have had an interest in sustainability principles, e.g. reducing embodied energy in architecture, using local materials. I bring similar ideals and ethics, through working with the Designful team and I hope to become an expert at this! I want to show clients that, making sustainable choices in design doesn’t mean compromising happiness, instead it enhances it as well as the environment around you. I like to stay in on rainy days and knit woollen jumpers to add to my collection, whilst watching the entire back catalogue of the Louis Theroux documentaries. Designful is a very down to earth firm that celebrates individuality, honesty and practicality. I like that Designful clients are from all walks of life, with different ideas and lifestyle needs. Designful has a strong design philosophy that infuses every client’s individuality within a project, and yet allows it to fit within a practical and feasible framework.”
BELINDA SWIFT – OFFICE MANAGER, ADMINISTRATION: Belinda comes from a management background and keeps us all organised and caffeinated! Belinda has a passion for connecting with people who share the same ideas. “I love the idea that good design can be simple, sustainable, and achievable. Belinda’s most important ethic is integrity. I figure if I live to that, then I’ve done what I can, with what I’ve got! Belinda’s favorite thing to do is… “I was going to say gardening…but really it’s being IN the garden. I spend more time observing than I do actually doing….which explains many things about my garden.”
STEVE HILLIARD – DOCUMENTER: Steve brings a wealth of building knowledge to the team and has built many homes and boats in his time and he draws on this knowledge to inform his drafting. Steve likes to build things! Go on adventures into the Tassie wilderness and paint.

At Designful we believe that what we do for work is an enjoyable and rewarding part of our life and we aim to integrate life and work for a holistic good time! and our well being. We generally work a 4 day week, taking Fridays off to be with our families and children or an extended time out in nature. Staying productive, healthy and happy is important to us.
The five of us look forward to working with our current and new clients, creating spaces, helping you achieve your goals and having a rewarding and fun time in the process!
“Thank you so much for your wonderful concept plans for us. it was a real treat to have these various options, and we have loved spending the week impugning each of these in turn.” Valued client, Ridgeway
“We have worked with Jane from Designful on the renovation of our house and have been delighted with the results. She has great ideas and has been very helpful and professional. We would highly recommend her.” Valued client, New Town
“We employed Jane’s services when considering purchasing my parents’ home which is a much bigger house than our own. Our brief was to explore ways in which we could create more light and natural warmth in the house. We were also interested in the possibility of sectioning off a part of the house to allow another person or couple to rent out some of the house. Essentially – we had ideas for the house, but wanted to know whether we were trying to fit a round peg in a square hole, and if it was possible, how much it might cost to get the house feeling the way we wanted it to. Jane came up with a couple of options which answered the brief beautifully. In fact, we are so inspired with the vision she created that we are now considering getting her to play with some ideas for our existing home to see whether or not we in fact need to move at all! I highly recommend Jane not only for her creativity, passion and attentiveness – but also because she is generous, thoughtful and a gentle person to have involved in the crafting of your home” Lovely clients in Bellerive
“The plans and associated documentation were easy for me to interpret and a much higher standard than I normally have to work with.” Paul Kleywegt, Building & Energy Consultant, Building eValuate
